Arriving in Luanda

On Entering the airport On leaving the airport General Safety tips

The Luanda airport, Aeroporto 4 de Fevereiro, is situated 4 km from the city centre.

An airports company bus will transfer passengers to the airport arrivals hall.

 On Entering the airport building.....

Vaccination Control - It is necessary for the Vaccination Control station to inspect the visitor's vaccination card. This takes place at the long wooden counters in the centre of the hall. Your card together with your passport and the entry forms you were given on the aircraft need to be handed to the controlling person to be stamped. It is important that your vaccination card is correct or you could be subjected to many hassles and possibly given the injections you require on the spot by the attending Health officials. Your card will be returned with the entry forms stamped.

The visitor may now proceed to the immigration control point.

Immigration Control - Join the queue marked "Estrangeiro" (Foreigners) and then submit your passport with your relevant entry visa and the stamped immigration forms.

The visitor will be given back their passport and one immigration form with a stamp indicating the permitted length of stay in Angola. This form will then need to be re-submitted on departure with your passport.

Luggage Point - Collection of your luggage can be a trying experience as large volumes of baggage need to be accommodated. The whole process can last anything from a half an hour to two or three hours depending on how lucky you are. (Remember this if you have arranged for someone to meet you at the airport)

Customs - All baggage is subject to inspection by customs officials prior to leaving the airport building.

Luggage control - After leaving the customs area your luggage tags will be checked to confirm ownership of the luggage. Ensure all baggage has the necessary tags and keep your ticket handy with the controlling luggage stubs.

 On leaving the airport building.......

  • Take care when leaving the airport as visitors can be swamped by "helpers" who expect to be paid.
  • Keep a few small bills ($1) handy and make sure to pick only one or two people.
  • Petty crime does sometimes occur so be aware of your valuables at all times.
  • Remember smoking is prohibited in the airport building.
  • Warning: Photography of any nature is strictly forbidden at the airport and surrounding area.
